The Bible of King James
This was a beautifully written summary of the history and legacy of the King James Bible. Before reading this, I knew almost nothing about the King James Bible, and now I know that:
- It was the Ultimate Team Project, involving some 54 Latin scholars hailing from all kinds of lifestyles, political beliefs, and social stations.
- It’s more open to interpretation than you think: it’s revered by the Rastafarians, who don’t believe in Christ or God (at least not one in Heaven).
- Those 54 scholars figured out the secret to linguistic time travel: write in the language of the everyday people now, and it will still be readable 400 years later. (Although it scares me to think that LOL and “where u at” will be what’s most readable 400 years from now.)
History is amazing. Why wasn’t I paying attention to any of this when I was little!?
